Coder to Courier

Once upon a time, I was a coder not unlike yourself. My day consisted of coffee, perl and java hacking, meetings, and e-mail. I had a cubicle with fluorescent lighting, my own bookshelf and two computers. And I traded it all in.
Even before Office Space, white collar workers peered out the window (if they were so lucky) and imagined a more romantic life doing real work out under the sun.Well, having no children, no great career ambition and no financial obligations more pressing than a crippling student loan, a year and a half ago, I decided to live this dream.
I became a bicycle messenger and now I'm here to report back.

AP on file sharing on the indie artist

While I wouldn't exactly call being part of the BMG empire indie exactly, AP has an interesting story about the future of similar labels, along with the independent labels, and even the major label refugees who are embracing file sharing.  Nothing incredibly indepth, but definetly worth a read

Ralph Klein, the CBC, Enron and Don Hill

A few weeks back, the CBC fired Don Hill, former host of Tapestry, and at the time current host of a province wide call in show. While various political reasons have been put forward as to why this happened, a March 22nd column in the  globe and mail has this to say:

More musings about my old friend Don Hill, dismissed recently by the CBC as host of Wild Rose Forum, an Alberta phone-in show. Last week, I noted that, while supporters were protesting his dismissal, Hill himself had declined comment. With good reason: If he breaks silence, his severance package evaporates.

Fans of Hill insist that he is a political casualty of right-tilting CBC executives. While he was exposing the link between bankrupt Enron's manipulation of the electricity market and TransAlta, a utility with close connections to Ralph Klein's government, the CBC was inviting various Tory apologists on the air, including Rod Love, the premier's former chief of staff, and leadership hopeful Jim Dinning, former executive vice-president of TransAlta.

Transcripts released by the U.S. Energy Regulatory Commission suggest that Enron used Alberta as a pilot project for rigging California's power market. I venture we have not heard the last of this.

For those of us who live in cities, towns, or suburbs

The Long Emergency is going to be a tremendous trauma for the human race. We will not believe that this is happening to us, that 200 years of modernity can be brought to its knees by a world-wide power shortage. The survivors will have to cultivate a religion of hope -- that is, a deep and comprehensive belief that humanity is worth carrying on. If there is any positive side to stark changes coming our way, it may be in the benefits of close communal relations, of having to really work intimately (and physically) with our neighbors, to be part of an enterprise that really matters and to be fully engaged in meaningful social enactments instead of being merely entertained to avoid boredom."

James Howard Kunstler has an interesting article on the future of our oil-based lifestyle up on Rollingstone . Interesting ideas for sure, and one only need to read more into the real estate bubble to see where things could be going.
Did I mention that I"m pretty happy to be living in a city with good public transit, and that I don't need a care more then about once a month?

If you you're not familiar with Kunstler's books about the past, present and future our of built environment, check them out here

Corporate Hegemony, again

From Tinymixtapes:

A huge flaming ball of brand-marketing synergy exploded in Austin, Texas at the South By Southwest festival last week, when auto-manufacturer Toyota announced the development of their own record label. Scion A/V will be focused primarily on the hip-hop style, with the first release being L.A.'s Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, a 60-plus member group that applies the symphonic form to hip-hop music. Like you couldn't figure that out.

The label takes its name from Toyota's Scion line of automobiles, three cars that look suspiciously similar to Honda's ElementFocus and aim equally suspiciously at the same young, hip demographic (see Ford's scintillating pop-punk version of "Farmer in the Dell" for proof, jocko). Toyota claims they will not be making any money on this venture but are instead in it to enable "unsigned artists to get their feet up."

Scion A/V:  http://www.scion.com/live/live_music.html

In case you haven't seen the Scion car yet, take a look here
As all good middle income suburb kids know, most people from the outer suburbs already fear the inner city. Selling those same people a car that looks like it might be a bit more protective is genius marketing for sure, it's also incredibly fucked up and does little to help show that urban cores are not desolate  crime ridden war zones though. Well, I'd just like to thank Toyota for helping fight social/economic and racial inequality with the release of the car to keep you safe from the poor/needy and terrorists. At the same time, remember to listen to the "urban" music released on the the Scion label.  Consume the urban, but fear the urban. Your head will asplode.

Esthero vs Owen (round 1, fight!)

From this thread on 20hz

(i sure hope it's real)

Esthero (remember her from the 90's/ or Summersault fest) is facing off against Owen (the fucking genius violin player from Les Mouches/Hidden Cameras/Jim Guthrie/Final Fantasy). After Own complained about not getting paid by Ms Esthero, she replied:

dear owen:

fuck you.

love esthero

btw

your legion of 17yr olds is most impressive.

I'm really sorry you're such an asshole.

well, this should be interesting.  Indie-violin star vs a girl who signed to Sony long ago.
